BIG IDEA - GRADE 10

HOOPS TO WATTS- WINNING BIG IDEA (2024-25) FROM CLASS X N &

HOUSE HEROS- SPECIAL MENTION- FROM CLASS XG

The Problem Statement

As the UAE strives toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, schools and other institutions continue to rely heavily on electricity. However, the current renewable energy infrastructure struggles to meet this growing demand. Schools, which serve as hubs of learning and development, have an opportunity to lead by example in the shift toward sustainability. There is an urgent need for self-sustaining solutions that reduce environmental impact and encourage students to actively participate in creating a greener future.

The Big Idea Solution

Hoops to Watts brings this vision to life by converting the energy from each basket scored into usable power. By attaching a dual-motor system to basketball hoops, the system captures kinetic energy from each shot and converts it into electricity, which is then stored for later use. This process is seamless, ensuring that the game remains uninterrupted while simultaneously contributing to sustainability. Through this innovation, schools can take an active role in energy generation. Playing sports becomes more than just entertainment it becomes a source of energy and sustainability.

Proposed Innovation

With Hoops to Watts, schools are no longer just consumers of electricity—they become producers. Every shot made on the court transfers into clean, renewable energy. On an average day, 30-40 students play basketball, scoring around 220 baskets. Each successful shot generates 5 volts, leading to a daily total of 1,100 volts. Over a month, this amounts to 34,100 volts, enough to power approximately four homes. This simple yet effective system turns an everyday activity into a source of sustainable energy, demonstrating how small actions can lead to a big impact. By integrating renewable energy with sports, Hoops to Watts reduces dependence on the grid while empowering students to contribute to a more sustainable future.

SPECIAL MENTION- BIG IDEA PROJECT (2024-25)

House Heros – 10 G

The Problem Statement

Volunteering and community service play a crucial role in developing compassionate and responsible individuals. Last year, limited participation of students in the voluntary work segment of holiday homework reflected a lack of motivation. To address this, a structured system is needed to make volunteering more accessible and rewarding. By reinforcing the House system, students can develop a deeper sense of connection and pride. Encouraging participation through well-organized initiatives enhances student engagement, imparts social responsibility, and creates a more connected school community.

The Big Idea Solution

House Heros transforms schools into spaces where kindness, service, and community efforts are recognized and celebrated. The project proposes creating a website and app that connects students with volunteering opportunities through friendly competition. It makes volunteering more engaging and accessible by providing a user-friendly platform with a regularly updated list of opportunities within the school and local community.

Proposed Innovation

House Heros encourages participation through a house-based leaderboard, where students track their contributions, compete in friendly challenges, and celebrate achievements. A personal progress tracker helps students see the impact of their efforts, while a point system rewards the dedication of the members of the House and highlights the winning House each year. With an affordable development budget, community service becomes an engaging and rewarding experience, fostering a stronger sense of purpose, teamwork, and responsibility, ultimately shaping a school culture that values giving back.
